Seagulls Riot at Newhaven Harbour
A potentially serious altercation between a group of Herring Gulls and rival Black Backed Gulls was averted by the intervention of the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service after they were called to the scene by the UK Border Agency on Saturday night.
Tempers flared when a Black Backed gull chick, who had fallen onto a flat roof on the premises of the UK Border Agency, was saved from certain death by members of the Agency staff. Unaware that the chick belonged to the Black Backed gulls, staff placed the chick on a neighbouring flat roof where rival Herring Gulls were nesting.
Almost immediately a fight broke out between the two groups of gulls resulting in the Agency staff calling upon the Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service to attend the scene to attempt to quell the violence. Under extremely difficult circumstances members of the rescue service plucked the original Black Backed chick from the jaws of death and reunited the chick with its family some thirty five feet from where it fell.
It is a shame that more recognition is not given to these heroic Wildlife Rescue Services that are situated around the UK. To see more of the work of the East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service visit their website by using the link above.
