Weather Alert
Much of the UK is about to experience a very cold spell of weather lasting into the middle of next week.
Obviously it is too early to have planted any summer plants outside, however, people are buying plug plants ready to make their summer hanging baskets.
Keep the plants in a warm draught free place for now. If you have a greenhouse make sure there is some heating on and if not already done line the inside of the greenhouse with bubble polythene. Cover any tender plants and seedlings with fleece or newspaper.
The mild weather we have experienced this year has meant a lot of small mammals appearing earlier than normal. The forecast of severe cold weather is bad news for them. If you still have piles of fallen leaves lying in the garden leave them for the time being and make a mound of them so hedgehogs and other animals can get inside the pile and stay warm.
Mammals and birds need to keep their energy levels high in order to withstand the cold days and especially the cold nights. Put feed out for them that is of a high energy type also ensure plenty of fresh water.
Hopefully this cold spell will prove to be the last and we can return to the beautiful spring weather we have experienced over the past week.
