Testing our Home and Garden Products

Although I am confident that the items we sell at Oaktree Home and Garden are of good quality and value for money, I do like to try them for myself just to make sure you are getting a good product.

In March I attached the Birch Log Nest Box to the trunk of a large palm tree in the garden, the box was fixed approximately six feet from the ground, facing east. Within a few weeks a pair of blue tits were busy making a nest, I am now awaiting the chirping of chicks.

At the same time I hung a plastic nyjer feeder from the spreading branches of our old lilac tree, filled with nyjer seed and awaited the first visitor.
Before long the feeding ports were occupied, mostly by Dunnocks.
Once the seed had dropped half way down the feeder I decided to replenish it with sunflower seed, giving the birds a choice of two meals. This was a mistake!
The first and only visitor was a squirrel, although unable to feed from the ports it took the creature only a short time to chew off the offending plastic that prevented his entry to the sunflower seed rendering the feeder useless for future visitors.
Two points to note here, if squirrels are a problem in your garden, use metal feeders and secondly do not fill nyjer feeders with other types of feed that is attractive to squirrels, in my case, sunflower seed.
