Spring Gardening Jobs
March is with us and Spring is around the corner. The weather has not been very kind and few of us would relish being outdoors in all the wind and rain we have recently been experiencing, however, in between the bad days there are some nice sunny ones when we can get out and do a few jobs in and around the garden.
I will list a few suggestions here, the more complicated jobs will be explained in more detail in the ‘How To’ category.
Seed Sowing Providing you have a heated greenhouse / propagator or can put your seeds on a warm window ledge, this month is the time to sow some annual bedding plant seed, check the instructions on the packets as some seed germinates much quicker than others, for example Marigolds, and you do not want to be in a position where all the seed is ready to be pricked out and you have no space to put them anywhere. If left in the seed trays for too long they will grow tall and spindly. Seed that can be sown now include Antirrhinum, Ageratum, Begonia semperflorens, Lobelia, Salvia, Stocks and Verbena. Now is also a god time to sow perennial seed.
Greenhouse General Spring Cleaning can be done in the greenhouse, the glass can be cleaned inside and out, check the panes to see if any are loose or cracked.
Prepare the greenhouse for whatever you plan to grow in there. Clean pots and trays.
Borders and Vegetable Plots Once the ground has dried out a bit and the earth does not stick to boots in great clods it is worth digging over the soil and mulching or feeding with, preferably, organic material. If growing runner beans, mark out the area where you intend to plant them in readiness for digging and mulching the trench. Check the bean canes are fit for another season.
Roses March is traditionally the month for hard pruning of rose bushes. Check first that the bushes are solid in the ground and not been knocked about by the winter gales. Prune hard and add a proprietory rose fertilizer around the base of the plant. Dispose of prunings and check ties and stakes.
Wisteria If not already done, now is the final chance to prune the wisteria to give an amazing floral display later on in the year.
Garden Birds The Garden Birds are getting busy looking for appropriate nesting sites, the more common birds like Tits, Robins and Wrens are frequent visitors this month, our Nest Boxes are specifically designed for different species as is the various bird food we have for sale.
Well there’s a few early jobs to be getting on with. If you have any questions or suggestions please contact us using the form below. In the next few days I will add some more Spring tasks that can be started on this month.
